In a recent collaboration with National Mill Dog Rescue, North Shore Animal League America saved 53 small breed dogs from the inhumane conditions of commercial breeding facilities in the Midwest. The rainy morning of their arrival did not dampen the spirits of all the volunteers, who were enthusiastically waiting to greet the survivors. These resilient canines – including Shih Tzus, Cavapoos, mini Australian Shepherds, Labradoodles, French Bulldogs, Maltese and Havanese – were carried off our Mobile Rescue Unit and into the safety of our Port Washington adoption center to start their new life.

The transport is part of an ongoing collaboration with our long-time partner in animal welfare, National Mill Dog Rescue. The arrival of these particular dogs and puppies is also something that Animal League America Kennel Manager Jamie Malone always looks forward to, noting, “These beautiful canines obviously did not get the life that they deserved up until this point. So to see them arrive here, knowing that they’re safe, and knowing what awaits them, is really exciting.”

The canines all seemed to welcome their first tender cuddles; many burrowed into the arms of our volunteers, and tails wagged excitedly. Life in a commercial breeding facility is a cruel existence, where animals are treated as commodities, but now the dogs will be receiving all the care they need. Ted Moriates, Animal League America Rescue Team Leader, explained, “These guys were no longer wanted by their commercial breeders, and we are the lucky ones who got them. They all will be going to grooming. They’re meeting with our vets, they’re meeting with our training department, and they’re all going to be ready to find loving homes.”

The journey to recovery for some of the dogs will be extensive – requiring medical and dental treatments and behavioral care – but our no-kill promise means that they will all have everything they need to thrive. Now each one of these endearing rescues can put their awful start to life behind them, and one day soon will get to flourish in their new home.
