When you visit North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center in Port Washington, NY, an Adoption Counselor will help you determine the type of animal that will best fit your lifestyle. They will introduce you to the animals you are interested in. The meet and greet will give you the opportunity to bond with your potential companion. You will have plenty of time to play and interact with your new friend in our family-friendly areas designated for that purpose. When you decide to adopt an animal, the counselor will walk you through the process and help you complete the application.
Adoption fees offset a fraction of the cost to save the animals in our care and prepare them for adoption into responsible, loving homes. This can include rescue transportation, wellness exams and vaccinations, spay/neuter, food and board, grooming and much more.
Our adoption fees are as follows:
Puppies (up to 6 months) | $375
Adult Dogs (over 6 months) | $125
Small Breed & Pure Breeds (over 6 months) | $325
Kittens (up to 6 months) | $125
Double Kittens | $200 | |
Adult Cats (over 6 months) | $75
Double Adult Cats | $100 | |
10% Military Discount: North Shore Animal League America is proud to offer a 10% discount to all active duty military members, reserves, retirees and veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Proof of service required.
Where applicable, a $50 Spay/Neuter deposit is required for kittens, $75 for puppies. Please note that adoption fees at our mobile adoption locations may vary.
High-Quality Medical Care
For the first 15 days following your adoption, we will care for an adopted animal in our medical center (co-pays are required for services). An adoption counselor will provide any adopter with specific details on what medical services are covered. After this period, adopters can transition to our Pet Health Centers where our high-quality veterinary care continues.
Our Pet Health Centers
We offer low-cost, high-quality veterinary care to all dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens—including pets not adopted here. Our quality veterinarian team provides all the services you would expect from a private veterinary practice, and when you visit our Pet Health Centers, not only do you receive low-cost pet care, but proceeds help support our mission to save lives.
Discounted Specialty Services at The Animal Medical Center (AMC)
North Shore Animal League America has partnered with The Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York City to provide high quality specialty veterinary services for our adopters at a discounted rate. Every North Shore Animal League America adopter is issued a special tag that entitles the adopter to 20% off any specialty medical services. Simply show your tag when you check in at AMC and 20% will automatically be deducted from your final bill.
Training and Behavioral Services
Our talented group of dog trainers —and cat trainers— help adopters smoothly transition their new pet into their home.
Pet Supply Store
We know that there are things you’ll need to bring your newly-adopted pet home and items you’ll need to continue to care for your pet. The good news is that the prices in our Pet Supply Store are often lower than some of the large, discount chain stores, and our store is staffed by knowledgeable, animal professionals who can answer all of your pet care questions. Best of all, all proceeds benefit our animal welfare programs and help us save more lives.
We always want our adopted pets to have a safe and easy transition from shelter to happy home. Before you come to pick up your new best friend, remember to have the following items on hand to transport your pet:
- All feline adopters are required to bring an appropriate sized pet carrier to bring their new cat home. If a double adoption, adopters must bring two carriers, or a single carrier large enough to accommodate both cats comfortably. Cats and kittens CANNOT go home without a carrier, and will not be permitted to leave in a carrier that is too small for their size. If adopters do not have one, pet carriers are available for purchase at our Pet Supply Store.
