Recently, North Shore Animal League America partnered for the first time with a coalition of groups in North Carolina that work together to save cats and sent a team to bring back 23 cats and four kittens to our Port Washington, N.Y. campus.
This was the first time our organization worked together with NC Paws Kitten Coalition, Alexander County Animal Services, and Gaston County Animal Care and Control. There were many young, friendly cats in this rescue including two gorgeous orange tabbies, one long-haired and one short-haired. As a bonded pair, they will go to a responsible, loving home together.
“There are no words to tell you how grateful we are for your help and generosity. I thought Jennifer, the director from Alexander County Animal Services, would be in tears before we left because most of the cats and kittens would have been on the euthanasia list within the next few days,” said Susan Spaulding, President, NC Paws Rescue and coordinator of this particular rescue effort. “She works very hard to save as many as she can, as do most rural shelter managers, with little or no support except what we as rescues can provide. You saved a lot of lives today.”
Susan works with dozens of shelters and rescues in both North Carolina and South Carolina through her work with NC Paws Rescue. Her organization gets requests for assistance from all over since it specializes in helping orphan kittens and special-needs cats.
As Animal League America moves toward the opening of Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center this year, the Rescue Team is reaching out to form partnerships with even more cat rescue groups. The coalition “was very grateful for us and happy that we were able to take these felines,’ stated Karla Agostinello, Rescue Coordinator for Animal League America. “A lot of the cats we brought here are getting second chances. I look forward to working with them in the future.”
